6 Victorian Era Fence Styles - For Historic Homes
Until the early 1800’s only the elite could afford wrought iron (hand forged) fencing for their homes. When the blacksmithing trade grew, ornamental iron adapted to match popular architectural styles and ultimately peaked during the Victorian Era when manufacturing became accessible — an influx of cast products and mass-produced pickets, posts and rails became available to the general public at affordable prices, and forever changed the way people garnished their front yards and gardens.
Today, metal fences are often made to resemble antique iron but are made of steel or weatherproof aluminum, with hollow pickets.
Of the authentic antique wrought iron fences that remain, they must be cared for and repaired by blacksmiths. Rust is the ultimate culprit. You can read more about how to maintain your fence here. However, many people have had their painted wrought iron fences restored by a process called powder coating.
While materials have changed over the years, many styles have continued to honor a by-gone era.
